Cromwell has been under a boil order for almost a week, and people in town are hoping officials can lift it soon. The boil order went into effect late last week after bacteria was found in the town’s water supply.

“Everybody's upset about it, practically everybody in town,” Cromwell resident Kathy said.

She and nearly 100 others have been stopping by the fire station where volunteer firefighters have been handing out free bottled water. They also have two 500 gallon tanks full of drinking water to refill larger containers for families.

“You gotta use bottled water for everything practically. Brush your teeth, wash your face and so forth,” Kathy said.

The local malt shop is closed, as are the two cafes in town, because of the boil order. Tim Russell with Seminole Water District 3 told News 9 two separate tests came back positive for bacteria in the water supply last week, forcing them the implement a boil order.

“We discovered that possibly our supplier of water was not giving us the correct amount of chlorine, so that's what brought all of the chlorine into the issue," explained Russell. “What we've had to do is, is install a water chlorinator in order to get our chlorine levels up to the levels which are specified by the Department of Environmental Quality.”

Almost a week later, after the ban was put in place, Russell said the chlorine in the water was up to the proper level. Several additional tests results will have to come in before the town lifts the boil order.
