A homecoming ceremony was held in Mustang for about 80 soldiers from an Oklahoma Army National Guard artillery battery, who returned from Afghanistan Tuesday morning.

The soldiers were welcomed home at a ceremony at the Mustang Armed Forced Reserve Center. The Fort Sill-based artillery battery mobilized last September.

Oklahoma National Guard officials say the battery made history in January when they provided artillery fire using the High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems, or HIMARS, in support of coalition forces. It was the first time since Desert Storm that an Oklahoma Guard unit fired rockets during combat.

The battery was replaced last month in Afghanistan by their sister unit, Battery B, 1st Battalion, 158th Field Artillery.
