Fireworks Stand Teaching 4th Of July Safety

Just one more day until Independence Day, and along with the holiday comes firework safety reminders.

This year we've found one stand doing all it can to keep everyone safe.

If you've ever handled fireworks, you know something small can be a big danger. That's why one stand owner has some customers trading a lighter for a book.

Just like the sign states, two blocks north of Waterloo on Coltrane, you'll find the Cox family business, where mom Malissa is lighting up for their eleventh year.

"I have kids tell me they save money all year to buy fireworks on the fourth," fireworks stand owner Malissa Cox said.

Log Home Fireworks is close to home for more than just the Cox family. Originally opened to help pay for some medical bills, the family now donates much of their profit to their church to help fund mission trips.

"One year they helped some elderly here in this area," said Cox. "They stay local sometimes."

Since there is no burn ban, the family's donations are adding up much more than last year.

"When we talk to people, they're ready to have a good time and not have to worry about all the Oklahoma grassfires," Cox said.

More sales spark more safety precautions.

"You can never be too young to learn any safety measures," Cox said.

Malissa hands out safety coloring books for the youngest of customers, using those motherly instincts to ignite awareness.

"I don't want to hear anything on the news, a child especially, anybody," said Cox. "Having done this for several years, that's what makes me cringe the most."

Shooting off fireworks within Oklahoma City limits is still illegal. If caught, you could face a $302 fine.
