A Yukon mother's close encounter with a large snake Sunday afternoon still has her shaken up. It also has an Oklahoma Wildlife spokesman weighing in.

Brittany Morgan was walking back to her apartment from her complex's swimming pool, when she saw a menacing-looking four-foot long snake stretched out on a sidewalk next to her first floor apartment.

Morgan says a stranger nearby heard her screams, and caught the snake. She says he told her it was a venomous water moccasin, otherwise known as a cottonmouth. Morgan says that makes her fear for her three-year-old son Collin.

"I can't tell you how many times we walk around that corner where the snake was," she said.

Morgan's father in law took a photo of the snake before the Good Samaritan hauled it away, and set it free next to a creek.

We showed that photo to Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Spokesman Micah Holmes. He says it was not a venomous water moccasin and that those snakes are only found in Southeast Oklahoma.

Holmes says the only other venomous Oklahoma snakes are the copperhead and different kinds of rattlesnakes.

The Oklahoma Department of Wildlife is encouraging anyone who comes across a snake to just leave it alone.

Holmes says the best way to keep snakes away is to mow high grass around your home, remove brush piles, and remove any pet food that's left out.
