The Oklahoma Department of Environmental Quality is urging Oklahomans to be cautious at the state's water bodies during the Memorial Day weekend.

The department says certain bacteria, viruses and protozoa can be present in untreated bodies of water, with some occurring naturally while others are carried into surface waters. Some of the microorganisms are harmful and can cause problems such as ear infection, swimmer's itch, gastrointestinal upset, or other conditions such as eye infections and some forms of meningitis.

The department says swimmers should pay attention to posted signs and follow any recommendations.

Swimmers are encouraged to hold their nose and to wear ear plugs and swim goggles to prevent infection, avoid swallowing water, and stay away from floating debris, stagnant water, oil sheens or dead fish.
