Valley Brook Boy, 9, Still Critical After Being Hit By SUV

More information is coming to light about the 9-year-old boy hit by an SUV in his Valley Brook neighborhood. As of Saturday night the boy is still in critical condition. Police say the boy was playing in the street at the time of the accident.

The Valley Brook community is still in shock over Friday night's tragic accident. Neighbors say they would always see the little boy and his brothers playing outside, but never would've imagined this.

"We always go slow through here because we know those kids are always out," said witness Ricky Nixon.

No kids were outside playing Saturday afternoon on Cox Ave. in Valley Brook, just a day after a 9-year-old on the street was run over by another neighbor's SUV.

"The way it looked, she tried to stop, but it's at an incline. It's going downhill. She can't really stop on a dime driving a big car like that," Nixon said.

Nixon said he pulled right behind the woman driving the white Chevy Tahoe.

"She was panicking like she didn't know what to do. She was like in shock," said Nixon.

Nixon says the boy was in the street on his skateboard when the SUV hit him and he slid underneath her front tire. It is a tragic image he says he won't forget.

Investigators taped off the street. A neighbor rushed the boy's family to the hospital. The accident happened just down the street from the Valley Brook Police Station. The Police Chief says it's a first.

"It's just a really, really tragic accident," said Valley Brook Police chief, Michael Stamp.

Stamp says neither speed nor alcohol was a factor and that this case should alert all drivers to always be aware.

"And I know they shouldn't be playing out in the streets, but when you're in residential neighborhoods, that's a very high possibility and people need to be very vigilant," Stamp said.

News 9 spoke with the driver's husband on Saturday and he says his wife is distraught over the accident and hoping for the boy's recovery.

The Oklahoma County Sheriff's office and OHP are investigating. The driver was given a standard blood test. Police will have results in a few weeks.
