Consumer Watch: How To Sell Our Car

It's one of our biggest investments. But according to JD Power and Associates, most of us drive the same car only about six years. I've found several tips to put us in the driver's seat when selling our cars.

First determine the asking price. Compare it with others on the market, then bump up the figure a few hundred dollars to allow wiggle room during negotiating.

Give it curb appeal. Have the car detailed inside and out. Take a lot of pictures if you plan to post an ad online or in the paper.

Secure the payment before handing over the keys and title. If the buyer pays with a check, go to the bank together to cash it to make sure the money is in their account.

We may choose to sell or trade in our car to a dealer and we do have rights.
