The money is running out to help animals in Chickasha.

A program to help control the stray animal population is in question after the money allocated by Chickasha to spay and neuter animals up for adoption at the city shelter suddenly ran out last week.

Fran Morris' love for animals is the reason for her determination.

"We've got fifty dogs here today, and cats, and we're gonna be spay and neutering all of them," Morris said.

Morris works with Friends Fur Change and sees the perseverance required for strays to stay alive. It's why she, too, refused to give up when the City of Chickasha announced it had no more funds for the spay and neuter program.

"Well we just went berserk. Everything has been going so well," Morris said, adding that they have been adopting out hundreds of animals.

During the last fiscal year the city reportedly offered up $10,000 to help with the program. Friends Fur Change covered the rest of the cost.

"We weren't expecting to have them fund the entire thing alone, and so we just had to suddenly come up with something," said Morris.

Morris said the city only budgeted for euthanasia, not food. She feels the attitude is "better dead than fed". So they are fundraising for all of the needs at the animal shelter.

It's not Grady County Sheriff Jim Weir's job to deal with stray animals, but he is finding a way to help.

"If we can help the organization keep more strays off the streets that will be less out in the county bothering livestock," Weir said.

An anonymous donor apparently felt the same and gave enough money to pay for 50 animals to be spayed and neutered on Friday. Morris said the donation will keep the program going until they figure out where the next funding will come from.

If you would like to help, donations can be made to Friends Fur Change. A Garage Sale fundraiser is scheduled for April 18 & 19 at 1801 W. Carolina Ave. in Chickasha. Donations can be dropped off at the same site.

For more information call (405) 222-9866. An Adoption Fair is scheduled for April 5 from 11a.m. – 4p.m. at the Tractor Supply Store in Chickasha.
