New Plan To Solve Overcrowding Issues At South OKC Schools

The Oklahoma City School Board introduced a controversial plan to fix overcrowding problems in many south side schools. District officials tell us this is a temporary solution until more classrooms or new schools are built in south Oklahoma City.

The school board introduced the proposal at Monday night's meeting. The temporary move would take more than 200 students from U.S. Grant High School to Northwest Classen High.

Nearly 200 students from Capitol Hill High School would move to Douglass Mid-High. Some students who attend Shidler and Wheeler elementary schools would attend Douglas Mid-High instead of Webster Middle School.

Pierce, Rockwood and Westwood Elementary students would be assigned to Taft Middle School instead of Jefferson Middle School.

The school district says buses would be provided for these students because some of these schools are as far as six miles away.

The board is expected to make a decision by March 31. If the proposal passes, the plan would take effect this fall.

The Oklahoma Public School Board is expecting a lot of opinions on this proposal. There will be a town hall meeting next Tuesday, March 25 at 6 p.m. at U.S. Grant High School.
