Second Winter Wave Arrives, Icy Road Conditions Continue

A second wave of winter weather is moving across the state Sunday afternoon.

"It's going to get real bad, real quick here in OKC," said Meteorologist Nick Bender. "Complex of thundersleet and thundersnow moving in. Traveling discouraged. Capability to put down localized, heavy amounts of sleet and snow in a short period of time."

ODOT is reporting slick and hazardous roads throughout most of Oklahoma. Crews continue to apply sand and salt to roadways and bridges. Wrecks throughout the metro have caused lane closures Sunday morning, but all highways and interstates are open at this time.

ODOT also reported slick and hazardous roads in southern Oklahoma. Road conditions have improved in northern Oklahoma, but slick spots remain and are being treated.

Wintry weather is creating problems for some travelers at Will Rogers World Airport in Oklahoma City.

Spokeswoman Karen Carney said seven departing flights were cancelled Sunday morning as a mix of sleet and snow fell over the area. Carney said the cancellations were mainly due to the earlier cancellations of arriving flights. She said four additional arriving flights have been cancelled so far on Sunday.

But Carney said the airport is operating normally and a number of flights have arrived and departed. She said some flights are being delayed because aircraft have to be de-iced.

Oklahoma Highway Patrol Lt. Brian Orr said troopers responded to about 70-80 accidents overnight. He mentioned that there were some injury accidents but nothing major.

Authorities are advising everyone to stay off the roads if at all possible. 

Jack Damrill with the Oklahoma Turnpike Authority reported crews are treating roads and all turnpikes are open, but traveling is discouraged.

ODOT's Winter Weather Driving Tips:

• Check road conditions before getting out on the roads.
• Stay at least 200 feet behind road-clearing equipment; crews need room to maneuver and can engage plowing or spreading materials without notice.
• Allow extra space between vehicles, so there is adequate distance for braking in wet and icy conditions.
• Be aware of "black ice," which looks wet on the roadway, but is actually a thin layer of ice.
• Please be patient, plan trips ahead and allow extra time to reach destinations 

Captain D. Nelson with the Oklahoma City Police Department said OCPD is not working non-injury accidents at this time. Drivers involved in non-injury accidents should exchange information.
