Police in Norman are on the hunt for thieves taking A/C units from area homes.

Police think they are breaking into the units for the copper inside, and they seem to be targeting homes with one thing in common. All of the homes that have been hit so far are either for sale or for rent.

We ran into one woman who came face to face with the thief trying to steal her units while she was inside the home.

"He had both the tops off, he had the grate off, copper lying to the side," said Sheila Pearson-Wright.

She still can't get over with how bold the thief was after she caught him red handed on Friday morning. She tells News 9 when confronted, he told her he was a concerned neighbor.

"And he said, ‘well I heard popping noises and I just came over to investigate,'" said Person-Wright. "And I said, ‘well what gives you the right to come to my house and take apart my A/C unit without asking me or knocking on the door?'"

Pearson-Wright says she saw him pull up to her home on Shadow Ridge Drive in Norman, and then walk right into her backyard.

"To come to somebody's house in broad daylight and the lights were on in the office, and the blinds were open," said Pearson-Wright. "He just wasn't thinking."

Police say Pearson-Wright is not alone. Since November, they have received a total of 15 reports of stolen units on both the east and west side of Norman.

Like one unit that was ripped off on Riverwalk Drive, all of the homes had either a "For Sale" sign or "For Rent" sign in the front yard.

"They don't always take the whole unit," said Captain Tom Easley with the Norman Police Department. "Predominately, the pattern is to take the copper, which is always popular, and also perhaps the motor,"

Pearson-Wright is just glad she caught her thief in the act, before he could do any more damage, or leave her two expensive heating and air units to replace right before her closing.

"He just needs to be stopped," Pearson-Wright said.

Norman police are looking for a white Chevy extended cab short bed pickup truck that was seen leaving Pearson-Wright's home. And if you do have property for sale or for rent, police recommend that you stop by and check on it often.
