Several News 9 viewers have reported seeing a green streak in the night sky and wonder what it is. SpaceWeather.com points to the Comet ISON which has made itself seen around the world this month.

Comet ISON is now ten times brighter than it was on November 13-14 thanks to an unexpected outburst that made the comet visible to the naked eye. The comet may appear as a pale green smudge with "a riot of gaseous streamers trailing behind," according to Spaceweather.com.

Experts say they aren't certain if the outburst is the comet's nucleus fragmenting or fresh veins of ice vaporizing as it approaches the sun.

Whatever the cause, Comet ISON is considered one of the most beautiful and active comets in years. They say it is best seen in the east, low on the horizon just before the sun rises.
