Kingfisher's Board of Commissioners Tuesday backed the firing of the town's popular Fire Chief Randy Poindexter.

The Board voted three to one to support City Manager Dave Slezickey, who fired Poindexter last month for what he called repeated insubordination and an inability to follow directions.

During his appeal hearing Tuesday, Poindexter called Slezickey a meddler, who knows nothing about running a fire department.

"It is my hope the Board of City Commissioners will realize this, reinstate me, and allow me to continue to protect the citizens of the town I love," he said.

Slezickey told Poindexter was entitled to his hearing.

"Unfortunately in local government we do cause controversy, and the only way to fail in local government is to try to make everybody happy," he said.

Randy Poindexter was Kingfisher's Fire Chief for six years. Three years ago, Vice President Joe Biden awarded him the medal of valor after his role in a series of high-water rescues in 2007.
