An elderly man was carjacked and beaten in the parking lot of a midtown Tulsa Target Tuesday afternoon, according to police.

Several witnesses in the 17th and Yale Target store parking lot called police because they saw an older man trying to fight off a younger man who wanted his car keys.

Police said the young man kept beating the 76-year-old victim until he got the car. That was just after 2:30 Tuesday afternoon.

Police soon got video from Reasors, showing the suspect leaving the store just minutes before he attacked an older man putting groceries in his car in the Target parking lot.

"When he got out to his car, he was attacked and beaten pretty severely, and the suspect took off in his car and drug the victim a little ways. The man is 76 years old and due to his age, the amount of trauma there, he was injured pretty bad," said Sgt. Kurt Dodd.

Within minutes of the first news reports about the carjacking, a tip came in about the victim's powder blue Cadillac DeVille.

It was parked at the Cedar Apartments, near 11th and Erie Avenue, and someone had seen the suspect possibly going in an apartment, possibly leaving.

Officers surrounded the apartments, but after a search, they determined the suspect was gone.

They got a break through good surveillance video at the apartment complex, showing the suspect from several angles. And the earlier description of him had changed, because the suspect changed clothes and tried to hide his long hair.

"We do have good video of the suspect leaving the location," Dodd said. "He works his way through the complex and leaves on 12th Street going east. He changes his shirt a few times, takes off his ball cap, moves his hair around so he doesn't look like he's got the dreadlocks."

We don't have an update on the victim's condition, but he was seriously hurt. Police say he was hit on the head, bitten on the hand and struck in the face before he was dragged by the car.

Police are working to find the suspect and hope someone will recognize him from the video.

Anyone who does should call 911 or Crime Stoppers at 918-596-COPS.
