If during this 2 Cents I have to duck to avoid a flying object, just know that it's from Amanda, because we have had quite a debate over this one today, in fact some of the younger people in the newsroom think I'm wrong on this one.
The United States Education Secretary is suggesting, not mandating, just suggesting that local school districts consider starting the school day later for high school students because they aren't getting enough sleep.
He points to studies that show teenagers need eight and a half to nine and a half hours of sleep, and that districts that have delayed the high school start time have seen some improvements in learning.
Amanda says it makes sense.
Opponents argue the delay conflicts with family schedules, after school jobs, and extracurricular activities. But that's not why I disagree with Amanda on starting high school later in the day.
I think at 16, 17, 18 years old these students need to be developing the discipline of managing their time, turning off the TV after News9 of course, and most of all, shutting off their phones. I mean turning them off and going to sleep.
And besides, we all know if school starts an hour later, high schoolers are just going to stay up an hour later. So it's a wash.
