An 18-year-old Tulsa man was arrested for driving under the influence of drugs after hitting an Oklahoma Highway Patrol cruiser parked on the side of the road during a traffic stop, according to an OHP report.

Trooper Rusty Callicoat was parked on the side of eastbound Interstate 244 near Yale at about 2:20 a.m. Saturday. Callicoat had detained a Tulsa driver, Daniel Lee Self, and both were sitting in his patrol car.

As Riley Trent Wood, 18, drove past the scene, his pickup drifted right onto the shoulder and rear-ended the OHP cruiser at about 55 miles per hour.

Captain George Brown with the Oklahoma Highway Patrol said Callicoat "showed immediate concern for his prisoner and stated, 'that car is going to hit us - hold on.'"

Callicoat, 36, was taken to St. Francis where he was treated and released. Brown said the trooper was shaken up but is expected to be fine.

The 37-year-old Self was also treated and released from a Tulsa hospital. Brown said Self may face DUI charges, pending the results of a blood test.

Wood was not injured. An arrest report states Wood was arrested for DUI-drugs. Captain Brown said the 18-year-old had a blood alcohol content of about .07 which violates the state's DUI law for drivers under age 21.

"This is why we work so hard to stop DUI drivers," Callicoat said later Saturday.

"If it can happen to a trooper on the side of the road, in a car illuminated with emergency lighting - think what could happen to an unsuspecting citizen."

According to the OHP, Callicoat led the Tulsa-area OHP Troop B in DUI arrests in 2012 with 135. He's recorded over 160 DUI arrests already in 2013, again putting him in the lead.

He's expected to return to work next week.
