The search for a suspect continues after a shooting in the 3200 block of SW 74th Street.

It happened at the Hillcrest Green Apartments. Police responded to a shooting at the Hillcrest Green Apartments. When officers arrived, they found a man shot in a breezeway.

News 9 is told he remains in critical condition Thursday night as police look for the person responsible. A man found shot outside an apartment put residents here on edge.

"These children could've easily been in that breezeway, and there could've been a stray bullet or something hit these children," Carol Mowles said.

Police say shots were fired around 11:00 a.m. Thursday. The victim was found outside Beth Baldwin's apartment, and her mom called police.

"[I was] scared because that could happen to any of us," Baldwin said,

When officers arrived we're told the man was unconscious. He was taken to the hospital in critical condition as investigators combed over the crime scene.

Neighbors tell News 9 they've had a lot of drug problems lately at the apartment complex, and they think that's what's behind the shooting.

"Should these children get caught in the crossfire because of two adults acting up over drugs? I mean what is this world coming to?" Mowles said.

With no security on the property, they worry about their safety.

"I don't want to have to go back to the way, way west and carry a gun on me, you know? I can't do that," Mowles said.

"If that happened once it could happen again," Ashley Robertson said.

While police are still looking for the suspect, what's also unsettling for families is that the shooting happened in the daytime when kids were outside.

A big group of kids will be out again Friday morning waiting for the bus on the first day of school. Police haven't identified the victim yet, and they don't have much to go on as far as a suspect. Anyone with information should call Crime Stoppers at (405) 235-7300.
