RedHawks Split Doubleheader With New Orleans

A shutout win followed a shutout loss for the Oklahoma City RedHawks Friday as they split a doubleheader with the New Orleans Zephyrs in front of a crowd of 9,667 at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark.

The Zephyrs (47-49) won the first game of the night, 9-0, before the RedHawks (51-44) answered with a 5-0 win in the second game.

New Orleans built an early lead in game one Friday on the way to a 9-0 win. A double by Gil Velazquez scored Kevin Mattison, who led off the game with a walk, for the first run of the night. A RBI double by Jordan Brown put the Zephyrs in front, 2-0.

The RedHawks loaded the bases with three straight singles in the bottom of the second inning with one out, but they were unable to bring home a run. New Orleans then quickly extended its lead in the third inning on a two-RBI double by Kyle Jensen.

The Zephyrs added five runs in the top of the fourth inning. RedHawks reliever Alex Sogard walked Brown with the bases loaded to score New Orleans' fifth run of the night. A two-RBI single by Jake Smolinski gave New Orleans a 7-0 lead. RBI singles by Kyle Skipworth and Mattison closed out the scoring for the Zephyrs.

RedHawks starting pitcher Philip Humber (0-4) threw 2.2 innings, allowing four runs on four hits and walking four in the loss. New Orleans reliever James Leverton (3-1) was credited with the win, allowing three hits and striking out two in three scoreless innings.

The RedHawks responded with a shutout win in game two, as Oklahoma City shut out an opponent for the third time in five games with their 5-0 win.

Jon Singleton hit a home run to the upper deck in right field to score the RedHawks' first run of the series with New Orleans.

A two-RBI single by Brandon Laird pushed the RedHawks ahead, 3-0, in the third inning and a RBI single by Robbie Grossman to right field scored Jose Martinez for a 4-0 Oklahoma City lead in the fourth. Grossman led the RedHawks with three hits.

A RBI double by Martinez to deep left field scored Springer, who led off the inning with a double, for a 5-0 RedHawks lead in the fifth.

RedHawks reliever Jason Stoffel (4-0) allowed one hit and struck out three in 2.1 scoreless innings for the win. New Orleans' starter Scott McGough (0-1) allowed three runs on six hits, walked one and struck out two in three innings and was credited with the loss.

Oklahoma City's series against New Orleans continues at 7:05 p.m. Saturday.
