Mercy Hospital officials announced on Monday that there will be a delay in opening their new hospital in Edmond.

Officials say damage from the May 19th tornado is worse than they originally thought.

The 206,000 square foot building was scheduled to open on Monday, but after assessing the damage, that date has been pushed back to late summer of next year.

"We're disappointed about this delay in opening," said Nick Niver, Mercy Edmond I-35 administrator. "But, we need to remember how lucky we are that no one was on site when the tornado struck. Despite the delay, we feel really fortunate about that."

Mercy says the building suffered structural damage including roof, windows and interior walls.
