Bulldogs Down Newman 6-3 For Third Straight Win

The Southwestern Oklahoma State baseball team continued the momentum gained by a weekend series win at Henderson State by picking up a 6-3 non-conference victory over Newman on Tuesday afternoon.

The Southwestern Oklahoma State baseball team continued the momentum gained by a weekend series win at Henderson State by picking up a 6-3 non-conference victory over Newman on Tuesday afternoon.

Kale Thaxton got the Bulldogs on the board in the bottom of the first inning with a sacrifice fly that scored JR Head and SWOSU added two in the second inning with RBI from Jaden Chappell and Dietrick Turney.

Chappell picked up his second hit of the game in the fourth inning and came around to put SWOSU up 4-0 on an RBI single from Head. Newman scored their only runs in the top of the fifth inning,using two hits and one hit batter to get two runs across, cutting the lead in half at 4-2.

SWOSU added two insurance runs in the eighth inning, including an RBI triple from Chris Faulkner, his second of the season. Faulkner then would score on an RBI single from Kevin Cantrell.

Jonathan Johnson started and threw 5.0 innings for SWOSU and picked up his first win of the season, improving to 1-3. Johnson allowed five hits and two runs while striking out three Jets and walking one. Carson Corff, Kevin Hamm and Earl Jenkins combined to allow just two hits over the final four innings in relief.

With the win, SWOSU improves to 14-11 on the year heading into a three-game series this weekend against Ouachita Baptist.
