Dog Thrown Off OKC Bridge Continues On Road To Recovery

There's a new beginning in the road to recovery for that German Shepherd who was thrown off an Oklahoma City bridge last December.

Right now, "Rookie" is recovering from a new surgery. For the past few months, Rookie has been undergoing medical treatment. Now for the first time, we're hearing from the state trooper who rescued -- and adopted him.

Sporting a few bandages, Rookie knows his way around his new home. The 4-year-old German Shepherd has come a long way since December, when someone threw him from the SE 59th bridge onto Interstate 40.

"I've been a trooper for 15 years and I'd like to say things don't surprise me anymore, but it does," OHP Trooper Jennifer Fisher said.

Fisher is the state trooper who was called out to the scene.

"As I got out of my patrol car, he stood up and started limping back toward me," Fisher said "You could tell his leg was hurt and that he was bleeding pretty bad."

Rookie's leg and knee were shattered. Fisher got him to the vet and he underwent surgery a few days later.

"I went in to see him and said his name, and he just sat up and looked at me, and I told the vet then, ‘I'm taking him if we can't find his owner,'" Fisher said.

As fate would have it, Rookie became the newest addition to Fisher's family. They thought he was recovering well, until X-rays showed his leg wasn't healing properly and he had to undergo another surgery.

"He got to the point where he was actually kind of running on it and to go back and for them to say we're going to have to start over again was kind of heartbreaking," Fisher said.

Now, home again, his new family is hopeful he'll be running again soon. Rookie will able to start physical therapy again on Friday, and he's expected to make a full recovery.

The Oklahoma County Sheriff's office is still investigating the case. The person who threw Rookie has never been found. Fisher has a Facebook page monitoring Rookie's recovery called "Rookie the Miracle."
