The Vinita Police Department has requested assistance from the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation after an officer shot a suspect following a police pursuit.

The shooting occurred early Wednesday just west of Vinita in Craig County.

The OSBI says at 3:30 a.m., they were notified of an incident approximately a half-mile north of the U.S. Highway 69 and state Highway 66 junction.

The OSBI said two Vinita Police officers and an officer from the Big Cabin Police Department initiated a pursuit with a vehicle. That vehicle traveled down a dead-end road. The driver then turned the vehicle around and drove toward officers, OSBI said.

Officers fired at the suspect. Michael O'Mara, 24, of Wichita, Kansas, was taken to a Vinita hospital where he was treated and released for non life-threatening injuries.

O'Mara was booked into the Craig County jail on a complaint of assault with a deadly weapon, and possession of a controlled dangerous substance.
