SOCCER

Central Oklahoma soccer coach Mike Cook added five high school standouts to the program Wednesday.

Inking national letters of intent with the perennial powerhouse Bronchos were Ashley McDaniel of Tulsa Union, Kenna Dyess of Broken Arrow, Nicole Voss of McGuinness, Darla Hyde of Byron Nelson High School in Trophy Club, Texas and Kayla Turner of Charles Page High School in Sand Springs.

"We're very excited to have these five outstanding players join the UCO program and look forward to working with them over the course of their college careers," said Cook, who has led the Bronchos to nine NCAA Division II national tournament berths in 15 years at the helm. "We feel that all five are quality student-athletes who provide great potential that will strengthen and benefit us in the 2013 soccer season."

McDaniel was an excellent defender at Union and also plays for TSC Hurricane, one of the top club teams in the country. She's expected to contribute right away in strengthening UCO's back line.

Dyess is another solid defender who also plays for the TSC Hurricane club team. Her height will give her a strong presence in the back line as well.

The fleet-footed Voss plays club soccer for OFC in Edmond and should make an immediate impact in the midfield for the Bronchos.

Hyde is an athletic midfielder/forward with great speed who should push for playing time right away as a freshman next fall.

The versatile Turner can play a number of positions on the field and will provide added depth in several spots. She plays for the Blitz United club team out of Tulsa.

UCO went 16-3-3 last season, finishing runner-up in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association and winning its first-round game in the national tournament before being eliminated.
