Two women raced from door to door early Wednesday morning, warning residents of a northwest Oklahoma City apartment complex that the building was on fire.

Just before 3 a.m., Marsha Hawkins was awake and watching television when she smelled smoke at the Mayfair Garden Apartments on N. Steanson Drive, which is near N.W. 50th Street and May. She opened her door and discovered her breezeway was on fire.

Hawkins awakened her neighbor, Jonette Hill. They called 911, and then went from apartment to apartment warning residents the building was on fire.

"Between the two of us, we got everyone out," said Hawkins. "So that's the main thing that we are okay. Things can be replaced but people's lives cannot."

Thanks to Hawkins and Hill, no one was hurt.

Firefighters arrived and quickly put out the flames. The fire damaged several units, leaving six people temporarily homeless. The American Red Cross is helping those residents.

Firefighters don't know yet what started the fire.
