Oklahomans Send Blizzard Of Support To Sandy Hook

OKLAHOMA CITY -- When gunman Adam Lanza went into Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut and took the lives of 20 children and six adults, it was a dark moment that was felt around the world.

"We all have children here, so it's devastating," said Kim Burns.

Burns is a nursing supervisor at My Birth Center at OU Medical Center in Edmond, a place where she and the other employees hold children dear to their hearts.

"Dealing with babies here and bringing life into the world, I was devastated to learn that someone would take that away from a parent," she said.

Now, as the families and the community of Newtown, Connecticut heal and try to move forward, the children and staff of Sandy Hook must return to school, but it won't be in the same building where the killings occurred. Instead they will go to another building six miles away.

The Connecticut Parent-Teacher-Student Association came up with a way to make the return special, through a simple snowflake. In fact, they asked people around the country to send in snowflakes for Sandy Hook to help decorate the new school. Oklahomans are answering that call.

"We've had some spare time with the holidays, so we've been playing around trying to make different kinds of snowflakes and actually enjoying making them," she said.

The school district plans to string up the handmade snowflakes around the building to welcome the children and staff back to school next week.

"I hope just seeing all the snowflakes and knowing they came from all around the world, that they recognize it even as little as they are," Burns said.
