OKLAHOMA CITY -- Salt trucks are working around the clock on snow routes across the metro, making it safer for drivers on Christmas Day.

Oklahoma City street crews have been busy all day keeping those streets clear, and they are working throughout the night as well. They will continue 24-hour operations and 12-hour shifts until snow is gone.

Thirty-two salt trucks are making rounds at the salt barn, where there are more than 9,000 tons of salt ready to go.

Crews started salting snow routes overnight. Plowing operations have started in some areas. We're told levels of accumulation on roadways will determine if plowing is needed.

We did see a couple of plow trucks on the way to the salt barn come down I-44 going north. But for now, the city says the salt should take care of the lesser accumulations of snow.

"We will continue working our emergency snow routes, free and clear, as soon as they are free and clear, we'll look at exteriors. We can justify moving on," Michael Love said.

The good news is that things haven't been too bad here as far as snow. However, to the south, it's a much different story.

The National Guard told News 9 that 40 soldiers have been activated and are reporting to McAlester, Chandler and Durant due to the snowfall in Southeastern Oklahoma.
