Edmond Police Investigate Woman Suspected In OKC Scam

Edmond Police believe a woman who scammed a 68-year-old Oklahoma City resident out of $7,000 is targeting other victims.

Edmond Police spokeswoman Jenny Monroe said a woman matching a surveillance photo provided by Oklahoma City police tried to also scam an Edmond woman, but that woman didn't fall for it and called police.

The Edmond woman said someone calling herself "Edna" approached her in a Walmart parking lot. She claimed she found a pouch filled with the words "international documents" written on it, and didn't know what to do. Another woman calling herself "Tiffany" then walked up to them and told them to open the pouch. When they did, it was filled with money.

"Edna" said she worked for a nearby bank and suggested they go there and talk to her boss. Once they arrived, "Edna" went inside alone. When she returned, she said her boss "Mr. Stein" had counted the money and said there was $150,000 in cash in the pouch.

"Tiffany" then went into the bank and spoke to "Mr. Stein." When she returned, she told the woman "Mr. Stein" was in a meeting, but she could call and speak with him.

When the woman called, a man with an accent she couldn't identify answered the phone. He told her he would invest the money for them, but first he needed $7,000 in cash. He said each woman would receive $45,000 in return.

The woman said at that point she became concerned and tried to back out, but "Tiffany" became angry and said if she didn't do this, none of them would get the money.

The woman then drove with "Tiffany" and "Edna" to her bank. The two suspects exited the car and walked to a post office next door. The woman waited for a few minutes, then drove away and reported the encounter to police.

Edmond police say the story matched a recent scam reported in Oklahoma City.

In the Oklahoma City case, police say the suspect approached the 68-year-old victim at the Wal-Mart at 6100 W. Reno. She told the victim she was a bank employee and had just found a bag of cash. Police say the suspect convinced the victim she could have half of the money if she came up with $7,000 for processing fees first. The woman withdrew the cash and the suspect fled.

Edmond Police are working in conjunction with Oklahoma City Police to identify the woman in the surveillance photo.
