An Edmond man beat and strangled his girlfriend Tuesday, then sent his pet pit bull after her as well, police say.

The alleged attack happened at a home at 3609 Baird Drive.

Police say 32-year-old Chris Birchmier attacked his girlfriend Tuesday morning, then commanded his dog, named Butter, to also attack. Police say the victim had several lacerations and bite marks all over her body.

According to police, Birchmier not only beat and strangled the victim and sent his dog after her, but he also dragged her by her hair for several blocks. Someone driving by stepped in to help the victim near E. 33rd Street and Bryant.

Police caught up to Birchmier later in the day in Oklahoma City at St. Anthony's Hospital. They say Birchmier had gone there because Butter had bitten him, too, several times during the attack.

Birchmier's Edmond neighbors are disgusted.

"How could you be any worse? That's terrible," neighbor Duane Shipman said.

Birchmier is in the Oklahoma County jail. Police accuse him of five felonies. Police say there's no word yet on what will happen to his dog.
