One of Oklahoma's finest was laid to rest on Friday.

Claremore Private First Class Jon Townsend was killed September 16, during an ambush by some of the Afghan police officers he was helping train.

Funeral services for Townsend were held Friday. He's being remembered for his patriotism, his smile, and his deep faith.

Long before the memorial service began, flags lined the streets, and those who admire his service and sacrifice gathered to honor and support his family.

"He had more zeal sparkling out of him than I had in me," said Minister Claude Strong.

Townsend served in an Army striker team, operating in one of the most dangerous areas of Afghanistan, but was willing to face the danger.

"Jon never wavered in his duty, he never hesitated when called to step up, and he never quit when it got hard," said 7th Infantry Brigadier General Don Farriss.

Only three days after marrying his young wife while on leave, Townsend went back to Afghanistan and was set to come home in a few months.

"He was a young man, very much in love. He cherished his family. He was proud of his faith and was never ashamed to show it," Farriss said.

Strong said, "He loved his country. He loved his church. He loved the community and he loved the Lord."

In addition to his patriotism and strong Christian faith, Townsend was also remembered for his smile and sense of humor.

"Uncle Jon decided it would be fun to play dodge ball in the house," said Townsend's nephew, Austin Nelson.

Townsend was awarded a number of honors, including the bronze star. He was a man who leaves behind so many who loved and admired him.

"He was making a difference, that everything he did, he did for all of you here today, all of you he loved so dearly," Farriss said.

Private First Class Jon Townsend was buried with full military honors at Lone Chapel Cemetery in Adair.
