A 76-year-old man is recovering after he was carjacked late Wednesday night outside his home near S.W. 44th Street and Western.

The victim had just pulled into his driveway in the 700 block of S.W. 40th Street around 11:45 p.m. when a man suddenly approached his pickup truck. The man opened the driver's side door and said to the victim, "Get out of the truck or I'll shoot your ass."

The victim told police he tried to hurry, but the carjacker pulled out a small caliber gun and fired a shot. The victim said he heard the gunfire, and realized he'd been struck in the head. The carjacker climbed into the pickup truck and sped away.

Amazingly, the gunshot wound was not life-threatening and the victim is recovering.

Police found the truck about two hours later, just a few blocks away at an abandoned house in the 2500 block of S. McKinley. The carjacker had stolen a rifle from the back of the vehicle.

Police do not have a detailed description of the suspect. The victim told police the carjacker was a white or Hispanic male between 30 and 40 years old. There was no information about height, weight or clothing.

Police are not saying if the carjacking is related to the deadly beating of a man early Thursday morning just a few streets away at S.W. 41st Street and McKinley.
