The FBI is now getting involved in the investigation surrounding the attack of a Midwest City woman.

Kayla Elliot says her neighbor, Camino Nicole Maxwell, beat her up because she's gay.

The FBI confirms it has received a referral and is investigating if what happened falls under the federal hate crime statute.

38 year old Camino Nicole Maxwell was arrested for the attack, and was charged with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon this week.

Both an online petition and Facebook page were created to support Kayla. The Cimarron Alliance has now stepped in to make sure the feds are aware of this case.

Executive director Scott J. Hamilton told News 9 that Kayla's attack is the second one of its kind to be reported to his office in less than two months.

Both just wish sexual orientation was covered under the state's hate crime statute.

News 9 has also learned that Kayla has filed a Victim's Protective Order against Maxwell just in case she makes bail. Camino Maxwell is still in jail on a 5-thousand dollars bond.
