My 2 Cents: Valedictorian Shouldn't Have Said 'Hell' In Speech

Amazing to me that this situation involving the valedictorian at Prague has become a national story.

Amazing to me that this situation involving the valedictorian at Prague has become a national story.

If you haven't heard, Prague High School Valedictorian Kaitlin Nootbaar tweaked her speech to the 2012 graduates on the fly, and changed the phrase "How the heck do I know," to "How the hell do I know" when addressing her future plans.

That ticked off the high school principal who's withholding her diploma until she writes an apology.

First off Kaitlin, you shouldn't have done that, whether you thought it was cool or edgy or whatever.

And yes, I realize that word is at pretty much the bottom when it comes to offensive curse words, but I don't really want the 7-year-olds in the stands thinking it's okay to spout it off because the pretty girl with the fancy cap and gown did.

I know I might be in the minority on this one, but I'm okay with that because I'm tired of the continued coarsening of our culture. I don't like to hear people hooting and hollering at graduation either, especially 8th grade graduation, let's aim higher than that shan't we, but that's another topic all together.

As for the principal, get over it, you're fighting a losing battle. It's a live microphone, you can't control people when they have it on.

If next year's valedictorian tries to one up her when they're done take the microphone and ask them to explain why they chose those particular words to express themselves.

That might nip it in the bud.

I'm Kelly Ogle and that's MY 2 Cents.
