A man found sleeping outside an Academy Sports and Outdoors store at S.W. 79th Street and S. Walker Avenue was taken to the hospital early Thursday morning after jumping from a nearby roof in an attempt to escape police.

Police responded to an alarm and trespassing call around 4 a.m. A witness said 43-year-old David Winston of Norman was sleeping in an outside area where the trampolines are kept. Before officers arrived, Winston scaled a fence and climbed onto the store's roof.

The Oklahoma City police helicopter, Air One, spotted Winston and reported his location to officers. Before they could catch him, Winston ran next door, onto the roof of Life Church. Police say he then went over the edge of the building.

When an officer looked, he found Winston hanging on to a gutter. The officer tried to grab Winston and bring him back up, but Winston slipped away and fell 30 feet to the ground.

An ambulance took Winston to the hospital, where he was treated and released. He was not arrested. Oklahoma City police say they are not trying to arrest Winston because he did not commit a crime against another person. Police are still investigating the incident, and they will pass their findings to the district attorney's office for possible charges.
