Roosevelt Middle School in Oklahoma City will not begin classes Wednesday due to construction delays the district says make the school unsafe.

The new school year begins August 1 for Oklahoma City Public Schools, but students at Roosevelt Middle School will not return to class until Monday, August 6. Parents were notified about the delay through a phone call Tuesday morning.

According to district spokesperson Tierney Tinnin, construction delays have made the building unsafe for students, and OKCPS did not want to risk student safety.

Tinnin says the district is working with the Oklahoma City Fire Department and the construction company to make sure the school is ready for classes to begin on Monday. If the beginning of classes will be delayed again, parents will be notified by phone and through signs at the school.

Oklahoma City Public Schools is on a continuous calendar. The school year begins August 1 and ends May 30, 2013.
