The Pottawatomie County Sheriff's Office has launched an investigation after utility workers found a decomposing body near Shawnee Tuesday.
Oklahoma Natural Gas crews were working in a remote area near S. Bryan Avenue and E. Farrall Street when they spotted the remains.
The body was badly decomposed. The sheriff's office believed the remains are that of a male, but the Oklahoma Chief Medical Examiner will have to use dental records or other clues to determine the person's identity, There is a tattoo on the body that investigators hope will help them identify the person.
Pottawatomie County deputies are also trying to determine if the remains match any missing persons cases.
The Medical Examiner is performing an autopsy to determine how the person died. It's not known yet if foul play was involved.
