It was a hot day for a run, but that didn't stop hundreds of soldiers and civilians from pounding the pavement Saturday morning for the 2nd annual Blazing Sun Freedom Run.

Hundreds ran in the early morning sun to honor our troops and raise money to send them care packages.

"This [is] one of the smallest things I can do to give back to them for what they do for people like me," said sailor Michael Chartney.

Chartney knows what it's like to get love from back home and get hot overseas, that's why he and some other soldiers ran in uniform.

The second annual Blazing Sun Run also has special meaning to Marine wife Amanda Denton.

"My husband was deployed and I started running to lose weight. And then it developed into I want to do this for him," Denton said.

Denton did the run last year too.

"He wasn't here to run, so I want to run for him," said Denton. "My husband's with me and he ran the whole thing with me. I almost cried at the end because I had him with me and last year I cried because he wasn't here."

The Blazing Sun Run was put on by the Karen Stark at the HUGS project.
