Oklahoma Pair Wins US Open Sectional Event

Bishop Kelly graduate Madison Westby and OU player Blake Boswell advanced to the US Open National Playoffs.

A pair of in-state tennis players advanced in the US Open National Playoffs Missouri Valley Sectional Qualifying tournament Saturday, as Bishop Kelly graduate Madison Westby and OU's Blake Boswell won the mixed-doubles tournament.

The pair advanced in the semifinals by topping Mary Weatherholt and Kevin Kowalik in straight sets, 6-3 6-2 to take on Ingrid Neel and Luke Beling.

In the finals, Westby and Boswell claimed the first set easy, topping Neel-Beling 6-2 in a quick set, but dropped the second 7-5. In the final set, Westby-Boswell fell behind 8-6, but snapped off four straight points to take the match and advance to the National Playoffs.

The US Open National Playoffs – Mixed Doubles Championship will take place Aug. 22-25 as part of the New Haven Open at Yale, with the winners advancing to the 2012 US Open Mixed Doubles event.
