An Oklahoma City father is in police custody after shooting and killing his own son in what he says was a case of self-defense, Sunday evening.

Oklahoma City Police responded to the shooting at a home located at 408 NW 89th around 5:30 p.m.

The father told police he was forced to shoot and kill his own son out of fear that he was about to lose his life.

Neighbors say the father has lived in the neighborhood for at least 20 years. They also say his son recently got out of prison after serving an extensive sentence.

A deadly shooting in northwest Oklahoma City leaves a neighborhood shocked when they find out a father shot and killed his son.

"The old man never bothered anybody. The son got out of prison about six months ago, I think. Thirty years he did from me talking to him, he said he did about 30 years. And I mean mentally, he was a mental case," said one neighbor.

Police say the man who pulled the trigger called it in and told dispatch it was all in self-defense.

"He says that his son attacked him with some sort of a machete or hatchet. He pulled a gun and shot his son. His son was dead when officers arrived here," said Oklahoma Police Lt. Jeff Cooper.

Neighbors say the son must have snapped because recently things seemed to be going just fine. They say he's been walking around the neighborhood without causing any problems.

"He was good around the neighborhood. If you had trash in your yard, he picked it up, you know, one of those types of things. So it's just a shocker to see something like this happen," said another neighbor.

The father is still in police custody.
