Investigators are trying to determine what started a fire Wednesday night at the old John Marshall High School on N.W. 90th Street and University in Oklahoma City.

Someone called 911 around 10:30 p.m. after seeing smoke coming from one of the buildings. When fire crews arrived, they quickly put out the flames. Firefighters discovered some interesting items inside the abandoned building had burned.

"We gained access, investigated, and what the crews found is that they had a mattress and maybe a couch and some other debris on fire inside the structure," said Chief Phelton Morgan with the Oklahoma City Fire Department. "We were able to get in there and extinguish that fairly quickly."

The old school was built in 1950, but closed in 2006. Oklahoma City Public Schools sold the building in 2011. A maintenance worker said the building is boarded up, but people are constantly breaking into the structure. The maintenance worker also told fire investigators that thieves have previously stolen copper wiring from the old building.
