News 9 Meteorologist Nick Bender was headed to the news station when he and dozens of other people became trapped at a gas station by the severe weather Tuesday night.
Nick was driving near Memorial and Eastern in Edmond around 8:30 p.m. when heavy rain, powerful winds and hail forced him off the road. He took shelter at a gas station, parking his car under an awning. Soon, the parking lot was filled with other people trying to get out of the hail and pouring rain.
Nick pulled out his cell and began recording video. He said tennis to baseball-sized hail fell onto the cars, cracking and breaking windows and windshields, and denting cars that were not parked under the awning. He also estimated the winds were blowing at more than 60 miles per hour. The storms also knocked out power to the gas station.
About 40 to 50 cars were parked at the gas station at the height of the storm.
