The Oklahoma Sooners opened play in the Big 12 Baseball Championship Wednesday with a bang, edging Oklahoma State 1-0.

OU's Garret Carey blasted a walk-off home run in the bottom of the ninth breaking the scoring silence and giving the Sooners its first round win.

"I got an inside pitch that I could handle," said Carey after the game. "Luckily my barrel found the ball and the rest is history."

OSU's Andrew Heaney, the newly named Big 12 Pitcher of the Year, worked hard on the mound in his sixth complete game of the year. Despite allowing just three hits, and striking out eight, Heaney gave up the game-winning homer to Carey on a 1-1 pitch.

"I am really excited for our players, and what an exciting game," said OU Head Coach Sunny Golloway. "We need to compliment Oklahoma State and Andrew Heaney and the way he pitched. He goes nine innings in Tulsa and shuts us out and goes eight there and shuts us out. He is arguably one of the best left handed pitches I've seen."

OU reliever Steven Okert picked up the win for the Sooners to improve to 7-6 on the year throwing 1.2 scoreless innings in relief of starter Dillon Overton, who struck out eight in the no decision.

OSU out hit the Sooners by a 6-3 margin in the contest, but the Cowboys had a pair of scoring threats thwarted in the late innings.

Carey's long ball was the first home run of the season. OSU's Mark Ginther finished 2-for-3 in the contest and was the game's lone player with multiple hits.

Heaney fell to 8-2 with the loss, but in the process upped his season strikeout total to 140, which ties him with Jason Bell (1994) for the fifth-most in a single season in OSU history.

The loss was the fifth in a row for the Cowboys, marking their longest losing streak of the season, as they fell to 32-24.

The Cowboys will look to avoid elimination Thursday when they face either top-seeded Baylor or No. 8-seed Kansas State at 9 a.m.

Oklahoma advances to play Baylor on Thursday at 4 p.m.
