The Oklahoma City Redhawks opened up the series against Colorado Springs with a 5-3 victory Monday night.

Redhawks pinch hitter Matt Hessman came into the game in the ninth and sent a fly ball to left that scored the two go-ahead runs for OKC.

It was a pitcher's duel early on, until a productive third inning gave OKC an early advantage. Jimmy Paredes singled to right to score Carlos Corporan, then Fernando Martinez's single to left scored J.B. Shuck and Paredes to go up 3-0.

Colorado Springs responded in the fifth. Brandon Roberts started things off with a line drive single to right then Wil Nieves doubles to left to score Roberts. CJ LeMauiew then singles to center to score Nieves from third and cut OKC's lead to 3-2.

Colorado Springs tied the game in the seventh off a home run that Nieves sent rocketing to left knotting the game 3-3.

After a scoreless eighth frame, Oklahoma City used four singles to load the bases and it was Mike Hessman's ball to left that scored Shuck and Paredes to take a 5-3 lead.

The Redhawks brought Jose Valdez to the mound in the bottom of the final inning replacing Adalberto Flores. Valdez got one quick out but then allowed the Sky Sox to advance runners to third and threaten on a wild pitch.

Vladez gathered himself to strikeout Brendan Harris and closeout the game giving OKC the 5-3 victory.

Oklahoma City starter Wes Musick went 6 innings for the Redhawks allowing six hits and two runs while striking out two. Flores is credited with the win after two innings on the mound while Valdez' final innings of relief picked up the save.

Game two of the four game series is set for tomorrow at 7:05 p.m.
