LANGSTON, Oklahoma - An off-duty Langston police officer was hurt Thursday night while trying to break up a large crowd at Langston University.

The Logan County Sheriff's Office says a verbal altercation broke out between a man and woman around 11 p.m. Dozens of students came out of their apartments to watch the fight. Police officers and sheriff's deputies were called to the scene.

The university says an off-duty officer got into a scuffle with a man. A second officer stepped in to end the fight and used pepper spray to subdue the suspect. The wind blew the pepper spray into the off-duty officer's eyes. He fell to the ground and hit his head.

The officer was not seriously hurt and was not taken to the hospital.
