EDMOND, Okla. - A new way to handle storm water run-off has come to the metro area.

The city of Edmond just finished what is known as a "Rain Garden" at the new Blake-Service Soccer Complex. The 200-foot-long rain garden runs parallel with a parking lot.

Run-off from that parking lot is absorbed by the rain garden, which looks like landscaping.  In reality, it's a mix of soils, gravel, mulch, plant life, drains and pipes. Edmond Landscape Architect Ryan Oschner says all of those components filter the rainwater.

"It's a relatively simple approach. There's some aspects that need to be done correctly, but it is very achievable and very attainable on many different scales," said Oschner.

The storm water treated by the rain garden eventually drains into Arcadia Lake, which is Edmond's source of drinking water.

Rain Gardens were introduced in Kansas City in the late 1990's and they have become popular additions to businesses and people's homes there. This rain garden cost Edmond $38,000, which Oschner says they would have spent on landscaping anyway.
