Police are trying to figure out who spray-painted vulgar and racial slurs on two cars and a city sign down in Norman.

It happened near the intersection of S.E. 12th and Classen early Friday morning.

Police got a call about the vandalism around 6 a.m. Friday to find the vulgar and racial slurs along the "Welcome to Norman" sign, and similar graffiti on two cars as well.

One of those cars belonged to a military family who live at the nearby Saratoga Springs Apartment complex. Right now, police believe the people were randomly targeted.

As drivers pass by this "Welcome to Norman" display, many are doing a double take. Pink spray paint has marred the stone sign with vulgar words and graffiti. The damage is even worse in back.

Trisha Fontenot noticed the damage when she was taking her dog for an early morning walk. Two of her neighbors' cars were also hit.

Fortunately, her neighbors were able to buff out the spray paint, but not the memory.

Police say they do not believe the car owners were specifically targeted, and they do not believe they are dealing with a hate crime.

"People who do things like this are not the brightest in the world. Hopefully someone out there knows who they are and will call and let us know, and we would love to have a conversation with them," said Tom Easley with the Norman Police Department.

Fontenot just hates that she now has to explain this to her 6-year-old son. She says what makes her really mad is that the car that was targeted belongs to a military family. Fontenot says this is no way to treat a family who serves our country.

So far, police have made no arrests.
