Officers said they were trying to determine what the men were doing when Smith ran and refused to stop. Officers chased him on foot and in a patrol car. They said when they caught up to Smith, he turned toward them with a gun in his hand.

Detective John Szymanski, a 17-year police veteran, and Officer Grant Hansen, a four-year member of the force, opened fire and struck Smith.

Both officers have been placed on paid administrative leave while the department investigates the shooting.

Smith was rushed to the hospital. He's expected to recover. Police arrested him on suspicion of pointing a firearm and possession of marijuana.
