Midwest City Home Invasion Ends With One Killed
MIDWEST CITY, Oklahoma - A home invasion in Midwest City ends with one person shot and killed.
Police say Reginald Joseph Jr. kicked in the door just before 8:00 a.m. Thursday. The man inside the home shot and killed Joseph, then called police.
Dwayne Reed says he could hear the fear in his voice when he called following the incident.
"He told me that he heard the dog growling and then he heard somebody trying to get in and kick the door."
Police say Reed's son grabbed his finance's pistol and headed for the door. By that time, officers say Joseph had already kicked in the door and had a gun in his hand standing inside the home.
Reed says, "I guess he has seen the car gone or whatever and tried to break in." Reed says his son fired one shot at Joseph hitting him in the chest. Joseph died at the hospital. Reed says," I mean I'm sorry for the family of whoever the guy is I don't know who he is."
Reed says his son did not know Joseph either or why someone would want to break into the home. Jake Postlethaite, the landlord says this is the second time someone has kicked their way into the house in the last four year, "from what I understand there is a lot of dealing and drug deals going on in the neighborhood and stuff. They have a neighborhood association gathered and they are trying to clean it up."
Reed says it's unfortunate changes didn't come sooner so his son could avoid this situation, "he's feeling really bad about it too. I mean nobody wants to go down like that, ya know? Taking a life."
Police say Joseph had a criminal record including possession of a controlled substance and carrying a firearm after a felony conviction and while on probation. Joseph's father tells News 9, his son did know the people who lived at the home. Neighbors say they've seen Joseph at the house before. Police say this is the third time in 15 months that a resident has shot and killed an intruder under the "make my day law."
