OKLAHOMA CITY -- Two young boys remain in critical condition after being struck by a car Tuesday morning in south Oklahoma City.

The boys, ages 6 and 7 were hit when they crossed Southwest 89th Street on their way to Fairview Elementary School. Witnesses tell News 9 that their mother was walking the boys and other siblings to school just before 8 a.m. on Tuesday. According to police, the boys ran into the path of an eastbound vehicle.

Kelli Gaston has lived across the street from Fairview Elementary for only a short while, but in that time, she's seen the share of close calls.

"It's very crazy over there," Gaston said. "My son has complained he thinks he's gonna get hit and smashed like a mashed potato."

Gaston drives her 4-year-old son to and from the kindergarten even though she lives just across the street. She has two other children and doesn't feel safe walking across S.W. 89th with them.

"Logistically it's kinda crazy," she said. "Especially with the craziness of the traffic."

One side of the school's outside marquee recalls a fall festival from last month, but ironically the other side posts a need for a crossing guard. Gaston said that it's been there since before school started, and that it doesn't appear to be filled yet.

"Sometimes there has been one, sometimes there has been two. Usually there's nobody," she said. "It's really hit and miss as far as a crossing guard over there."

The driver of the vehicle voluntarily submitted to a blood test at an area hospital, and was not arrested nor cited.
