OKLAHOMA CITY – Area high school teams had the spotlight a night early Thursday, and Putnam City North and Norman were the big winners.

Putnam City North 35, Mustang 32 (2OT)

In by far the best game of the night, P.C. North and Mustang fought back and forth all game. The Panthers held a 17-16 lead going into the fourth, but a field goal early in the frame gave Mustang the lead.

P.C. North responded with a touchdown pass from Josh Robert Simon to Roosevelt Turner, and the pair hooked up again for a two-point conversion to gives the Panthers a 25-19 lead. That two-point conversion turned out to be one of the biggest plays in the game.

On the ensuing drive, the Broncos drove the length of the field for a touchdown of their own to tie the game. They just needed to hit an extra point to retake the lead, but a botched snap ruined that chance. Regulation ran out with the score still tied at 25, sending the teams to overtime.

The teams traded touchdowns on their first drives, forcing a second overtime. P.C. North managed to force an interception on the next possession, giving the Panthers the chance to win with any score. They did that with a field goal to clinch their first victory of the season.

Norman 42, Moore 14

The other big OKC area game was not nearly as close. The Lions actually got on the board first for a 7-0 lead, but that advantage did not last long. Norman running back and Arkansas commit Donovan Roberts took over for the rest of the first half.

Roberts rattled off 179 yards and three touchdown runs before halftime to lead the Tigers to a 28-7 lead. Roberts did not play in the second half, but Norman still ended up scoring 42 unanswered points before Moore finally got back on the board late in the fourth quarter.
