JOHNSTON COUNTY, Oklahoma -- Firefighters from 30 different fire departments are battling to bring a wildfire under control which burned 12,000 acres north of Tishimingo Thursday the county's emergency management director reported.

As of 10 p.m., nearly 100 firefighters had joined the battle which required the evacuation of five homes.

A National Guard helicopter has been requested.

Betty Roan, Johnston County emergency manager, said the blaze has been difficult to fight because it has been in mostly wooded areas.

Firefighters are expected to remain on the scene overnight.
